Meet PomPom, a spirited little kitten with a heart full of love and determination. Born with swimmer’s syndrome and unique back leg deformities, PomPom faces mobility challenges that could daunt the fiercest of kitties. But with her devoted sister, Dot, by her side, every day is an adventure. Dot is a bright-eyed and curious kitten, with no physical abnormalities. She is the ultimate support system, always encouraging PomPom to explore the world, whether it’s chasing after toys or finding cozy napping spots.

Swimmer’s syndrome is a condition primarily affecting young kittens that results in abnormal limb positioning and difficulty moving. Kittens with this syndrome often have their legs splayed out to the sides, making it challenging for them to stand, walk, or run normally. The condition is believed to be related to muscular or neurological issues, and it can sometimes improve with physical therapy and supportive care. While swimmer’s syndrome can present significant mobility challenges, many affected kittens, like PomPom, can lead happy lives with the right support and love from their families.

We’re currently working with PomPom through a number of therapy modalities, including:

  • Range of Motion Exercises: Gentle stretching and movement exercises can help improve flexibility and prevent stiffness in the joints.
  • Strengthening Exercises: Targeted activities, such as standing and walking on flat surfaces, can strengthen the muscles around the legs and improve overall mobility.
  • Carts and Harnesses: Customized carts can help kittens who struggle to walk independently. These devices support their weight and allow them to move more freely while building strength.
  • Custom Splints: These supportive devices are tailored to fit the specific needs of each kitten, providing stability and support for their legs and joints.
  • Safe Spaces: Creating a safe, obstacle-free area for play can encourage movement and exploration.
  • Accessible Climbing Structures: Low ramps or steps can help kittens practice climbing and jumping safely.

Most swimmer’s syndrome kittens will not achieve “normal” range of motion… however, we are dedicated to helping PomPom achieve as much as she is able before being ready for adoption alongside her sister Dot!

Bonded Pair/Supportive Pair

PomPom and Dot are a supportive pair. When they are finally ready for adoption, they must be adopted together, as Dot will assist PomPom throughout her life.
